Right when I think about ending Saturday Sunday Share due to the lack of interest, you guys blow it up!
Some really cool shares last week:
- Jay Caruso – is an awesome photographer and video-ographer-dude.
- Raoul Snyman – is a mad crazy coder genius guy.
- Marek – is super amazing juggling everything.
- Frank Gantz – is dedicated to his craft.
- Peter – is ridiculously cool.
- James Cooper – is EPIC.
The ChurchMag community is awesome and I’m so thankful to be a part of it!
As you know, I don’t share a lot, since this is a chance for you guys to show your stuff. This week, however, I thought I would share a couple of things I was really happy to complete this week.
First, I finished up and launched my Church’s website. It was cool to experience how easy it can be to complete a project like this, from start to finish, while overseas. Only reinforcing how possible it is be a digital tentmaker and that 8BIT isn’t crazy for having me a part of their awesome team.
The second thing I was so happy to finish up this week was the announcement of the ChurchMag Email Newsletter! Well, not just that, but also ChurchMag’s Church Tech for Mortals eBook (completely sponsored Bridge Element) that’s free for everyone who signs-up for the ChurchMag Email Newsletter that will launch this January. Of course, it couldn’t have happened without Jay Caruso, Bridge Element and the rest of the 8BIT team, who all did a killer job with this amazing project.
😀
Let’s see what you guys have been up to!

This week i’ve done a lot of things on new church page, but now i’m regreting that i did not choose existing CMS and customize it, rather than make everything from scratch, even with CodeIgniter. I’ve also completed the presentation video, I hope the youth will like it on their church classes :). And now i’m thinking i should go to church more, not just do things on computer.
Best regards from Slovakia 😉

Is it too late to jump on a CMS?
Raoul Snyman says
I gave up writing my own CMS years ago, and switched to Drupal. Now the only coding I do is a little bit of display logic in the theme, and the rest is set up in Drupal.
Marek says
well i think it’s not too late, I’ve been looking for some cms that is good-documented and ease to customize. Surprisingly (or maybe not : ) the two hot candidates are WordPress and Drupal. Both supports Doctrine ORM, which i really like for working with database. Can you, if course only if you know & want, tell me which is easier to customize, deploy and write custom plugins for? Thanks in advance ;D
Marek.
Peter says
Marek,
I would recommend WordPress all the way! I myself came from Drupal and there is no doubt in my mind that WordPress is so much easier to use and develop for. One of the biggest advantages that WordPress has over any other CMS is its community. Its much bigger, much more friendly, with more resources than any other CMS.
Drupal is built by geek and is made for geeks. WordPress is also built by geeks but its made for EVERYONE! Love, love, love WordPress 🙂 So many advantage to WordPress over Drupal
Raoul Snyman says
Actually, I found quite the opposite. I had to write my own theme engine inside my WordPress theme so that I could use my theme. With Drupal, I had none of those worries.
If you’re doing a blog, or a really simple site, WordPress is OK (it’s a blog, not a CMS). If you need to do anything out of the ordinary, you want to use Drupal.
Drupal initially has a tougher learning curve, but once you really understand how Drupal works, then you’ll realise why so many people (including M-TV and the Whitehouse) use it for their web sites.
Marek says
Thank you both for help, i was looking for some tutorials about theming for WP. I’ll take a look for drupal theming and then tell you result 😉
And again, thank you much 😉

Saying WordPress is a blog not a cms is neither fair nor accurate. While its roots are based around being a blogging platform it has, over the past few years, grown in to a powerful platform for both blogging and as a cms.

Yesterday, I hooked up the FM transmitter and turned on my computerized Christmas lights at home. I still have some programming to do, but the lights are currently synced to one song streamed over the radio. I haven’t had time to finish it until now (busy school schedule).
James Cooper says
Cool! Please tell us you’re going to video it and youtube it!?!?! 🙂
Stephen Peterson says
I will if I can find a legal way to do it (copyrighted music).
Raoul Snyman says
Would it not fall under the Fair Use clause?
Eric Dye says
Must. See. 😀
James Cooper says
Mostly this week I have been sneezing and coughing… Feeling better now though! Also done some more blogging, logo designing for a client (good feedback – hurrah!)
And more Christmas action this week. 190,000 visitors and 1million+ pageloads!
And a couple more christmas uke vids at: http://youtube.com/whychristmas
Mark says
these are becoming a guilty pleasure – I sit and watch them and grin.
I think its the Uke, it just inspires smiling.
James Cooper says
LOL, we aim to please!!!! Hope to record a few more this week 😉

James Cooper is my friend. 🙂

This week has been all about filming creating and uploading some introduction and reflective videos for youth group to impact teens for more than just one day a week. You can see two of the finished videos here:

Finally, I have been working with a new website called YouthMin.org to begin the #youthmin dialogue by hosting a Twitter chat, you can see a little bit here:

Great stuff, Jeremy.
We love having you a part of our community!

I’m so close to finishing a massive film project. Been working with Tearfund to produce a series of 4, 10 minute monologues for a Youth Audience and it’s been a massive endeavor!
At the same time I’m trying to create the identity, branding, website, social media strategy and all the other communication bells and whistles for a new PR company, I’m planning the edit of another charity film which I start editing next week and I’ve had to start thinking about the re-design of our church website which will be epic.
Lots of links to come when they’re all done – in the mean time, I am just a little tired….
James Cooper says
Wow that’s seriously busy. Looking forward to all the links!
Eric Dye says
Mark,
Your film projects may warrant a post.
Let me know if you’re interested.

Dang! Very nice!!!

Eric, I loved your http://odcsuffolk.com/ site! It’s very clean looking, easy to navigate, and I like how you had the three boxes about upcoming events, announcements, and blog posts decrease in size. It helped me to focus on the content of each box and it made me want to discover what was in them 🙂
As for me, I just finished creating my Facebook page for my new blog about online evangelism. I need 25 likes to get my own unique URL so if you guys can help me get that, I would be forever in your debt 🙂

Now THAT’S the Saturday Sunday Share of the year!

Awesome!!!! That’s the best kind of creativity there is, next to God creating the universe and all.

Great point! Thanks!

Been a busy week in OpenLP[0] land again. Tons of bugs being fixed for our upcoming release, beta 4, which will be landing on Christmas day. A Christmas present for everyone 🙂
I’ve also been looking for a job. I’ve had one interview, with a company that seems really awesome, but they’re not 100% sure they want me. Apparently I’m the best candidate they’ve seen, but they still have some doubts. It’s a bit nerve-racking when you need the money by the end of the month, and so far this month you have no income generation in sight… but God will provide.
