I was really impressed by how much information was packed into this quick read, Rethink Commmunication by Phil Bowdle. I read it from cover-to-cover in one sitting because it was really that easily digestible. Phil does a great job of explaining why communication is important, how we are to communicate, and why it has changed over time.
The “Playbook”
So what is this “Playbook” that I speak of? It is his way of communicating the plan that you need to have in place if you want to be an effective communicator in your church. In brief:
- Clarify Your Message;
- Craft Your Elevator Pitch;
- Brainstorm Creative Ideas;
- Develop Your Communication Plan;
- Execute Your Plan;
- Evaluate Your Results.
I would agree with each of these steps and the way that he outlines each one of them because they are all so important.
Some Of My Favorite Quotes
The purpose of an elevator pitch is to describe a situation or solution so compelling that the person you’re with wants to hear more even after the elevator ride is over. -Seth Godin
Creatives do their best creative work when they have clear boundaries and a clear problem to solve. If they have clarity around the goal, everyone is empowered to screen any strategies or methods through the filter of “will this help us accomplish the goal?” -Phil Bowdle
“Creativity is more muscle than magic.” Creativity is a muscle you have to exercise. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. -Phil Bowdle
