I’d be interested in seeing a poll of what languages 8BIT users prefer for desktop apps and web apps.
I thought this was a good Saturday question for the community.

I haven’t done desktop apps in ages… It’s all web for me nowadays.
I like:
PHP
JavaScript

Same. Last time I did desktop apps, it was either in Java or C#. Most of my work now is on some stack of web technologies.

Same for me as well. Last desktop development I did was about seven years ago using VB6 and .NET
Ben Miller says
Web: PHP/Javascript
Desktop: Python

Do you do a lot of GUI stuff in Python? If I do anything on the desktop now-a-days, it ends up being a script (most recently in Ruby) to automate certain things.
Ben Miller says
Not yet. I’m still in the learning stages for Python, and the most interesting things I’ve done with it so far have been simple games using the Pygame library. I hope to start doing more with GUI soon, but learning in my spare time can be a slow process.
A few months ago, I had several ideas for some Windows apps. The last time I did any Windows desktop programming was years ago with Visual Basic 4. But now that I have developed a taste for open source, I couldn’t see myself investing a lot of resources on the latest MS stuff. I wanted something higher-level than C++ or Java, so I decided to try Python. I don’t know why I didn’t try Ruby, but I’m enjoying Python so far.
Ben Miller says
I remember now why I picked Python.
