When it comes to our jobs, programmers are weird. Among many other things, we’re very particular about our tools, our environment, and possibly even the hours we work.
Earlier this morning, I tweeted out that I recently got a new set of headphones.
Hands down, headphones are the single most important non-programming related tool that I have (after coffee, of course!). Up until today, I’ve been a big fan of the Bose Quiet Comfort headphones but the Shure SE115 may have them beat – no pun intended :).
Feel free to chime in even if you aren’t a developer: what’s the number one thing you can’t live without when it comes to getting your digital work done?

A really, really big whiteboard. C’mon, who doesn’t love drawing diagrams?
Tom says
Seriously, we’re actually looking at bringing in a whiteboard, chalkboard paint, or huge canvas into Jared’s place to map out our stuff.

Agree on the headphones. Have some Sennheiser HD280 pros for home and getting some Sennheiser CX-300-II’s for the office.
Tom says
Totally. Once you’ve used high-end headphones, it’s near impossible to go back.

My second monitor.
Tom says
Ha! For real.
David Tate says
Second the whiteboard; got a “Big Bertha” from whiteyboard.com that is enormous. Sometimes I just draw pictures, because an empty whiteboard is somehow wrong.

agreed.

This is my favorite universal home tool. I use it for everything.
