When it comes to tech for younger kids, the iPad is where it’s at.
Nielsen conducted a study seeing what kids wanted across the technical spectrum and the Apple iPad held the top spot at 31% with computers and the iPod Touch up next at 29% each.
Here are the full results:
For those 13 and over it changes slightly with computers taking up the top spot followed by televisions, smartphones (non iPhone) and then the iPad.
Interestingly, the iPhone comes in behind Blu-Ray players, e-readers and the Nintendo Wii. I still think that has more to do with AT&T than the iPhone itself. Here’s the full chart for those 13 and up:
So where do my kids fit in? My daughter is 12 and she wants the new iPod touch (she’s sold on Facetime) whereas my 13 year son wanted a skateboard instead of any tech items.
What about you?

It doesn’t surprise me that the iPhone ranks so low in the 13+ range, because much of that demographic either already has one, or is already sold on an Android device.
What did surprise me however, is the number of kids wanting a PS3. I’ve long thought that it was a quiet market for Playstation and that Wii or Xbox had taken over. (Maybe it’s the wand-like interface and the recent release of the new Harry Potter movie along with the displacement caused by the market saturation of Xbox and Wii already)

Yeah, that PS3 ranking caught me off guard as well. The only thing I can think of as well is many of those kids already own an Xbox or Wii and also want the PS3.

Of the 10 branded products listed, there were only 4 different companies: Sony, Nintendo, Apple, Microsoft. That’s striking.
JayCaruso says
You’re right about that!
