Although we run ChurchMag on WP Engine and I fall in love with it more and more each day, I do have a Media Temple DV server that I keep my non-WordPress sites and websites I’ve built and maintain for some friends and ministries. If I didn’t love WP Engine so much, ChurchMag would probably be running on a Media Temple solution, as my DV uptime has only been beat by my WP Engine sites. Previous experiences (Media Temple GS, Site5 VPS, Site5 Reseller and Site5 TURBO) have given me less than desirable results.
Since my Media Temple DV requires more responsibility (learn more about managed vs unmanaged web hosting), I need to understand what my server is doing. Although Media Temple provides some basic data which is helpful, I would like to know exactly what’s using my server resources. Where can I trim and opitmize to not only make sites run faster, but more effeciently, too.
Here’s a new tool I’m trying:
New Relic
Looks fancy, doesn’t it?
I am really looking forward to digging into this a bit. The free version allows me to monitor one server—which is enough for me, and although there are some cool bells and whistles for a paid account, the basic/free information that New Relic will show me should help me understand how my server uses its resources. With that knowledge, I’ll be able to help streamline some sites and get more out of my server. Not only from a capacity standpoint, but speed as well!
With New Relic server monitoring, I can:
- See which servers have capacity issues so you can take corrective action
- See processes prioritized by memory or CPU consumption
- Get alerts for server health issues, including CPU utilization, memory utilization, disk I/O utilization, and disk capacity
- Track server health availability in cloud, physical, or hybrid environments
New Relic requires SSH root access, so it’s not for the faint of heart. It’s not just for hardcore pros, either, as New Relic provides detailed installation instructions.
