When Foreign Lawsuits Effect Local Churches

The eBook marketplace is starting to really heat up.  It began as a fragmented way for hobbyists and technogeeks to read a book on the go.  Then Amazon stepped in and blew everything up with their vision to “have every book ever printed, in any language, all available in under 60 seconds” via their Kindle reader.  With books priced at $9.99, consumers went crazy – and so did publishers!  Chaos erupted in the marketplace.

That was 2009.

Three years later, the chaos is even more pronounced.

Lawsuits swarm like flies on … well this is a family blog I suppose. 🙂

Just this month, the European Union came to a preliminary settlement against Apple and four other eBook publishers for artificially inflating ebook prices.  The fight is long from over, but the results look promising to consumers … and to churches.

eBooks Are Not Always the Best Option?

I love to use eBooks and think they may be the greatest thing for us nerds since the invention of the Guggenheim Press. The Amazon Kindle allows you to instantly look up a word in the dictionary for those tough reads for college work as well as the reader has access to thousands of new and top selling titles right at their finger tips that they could get in just a few moments. Even better, they have integrated social media so that I can quickly share quotes from the book that I never would previously take the effort to do without it. Seems like a win-win for everyone, reader and publisher. Unfortunately, eBooks are not always the best option for people and for the publishers.

Newsweek Surrenders to the Internet & What the Church Should Do

If this blog post had a soundtrack it would be Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust,” as Newsweek has announced that it will begin to shift to a digital only publication this fall. Of course, I’m not going to say it’s a done deal until it’s literally been done, but it looks like we may not longer see Newsweek on the corner news stands. Of course, that raises the question,

“How much longer will other printed periodicals be able to hold out against the juggernaut that is digital publishing?”
