Tax day is just around the corner.
For the truly mobile among us, H&R Block is adding to its stable of mobile apps by adding an Android port. Now, Android users (like their iOS brethren prior) can file an 104 EZ for free via the H&R Block mobile application.
The app makes use of the device’s camera to scan your W-2 for importable information and the app promises to notify you about filing status via alerts.

This post, I’m afraid, requires quite a bit of preamble to support the ridiculousness of its title.
First, let me define what I mean by “Mobile Apps”. I mean native applications for smart-devices. As you’ll see later, I’m not actually talking about all native apps, I’m talking mostly about Brand Apps, that is, applications that are organization specific rather than task/purpose specific. IE The Target App or the [Insert the name of your church] App.
Now what I mean when I refer to the “Death” of mobile apps is what every other tech blogger means when they hastily kill off a service or technology in their own highly-opinionated post. And that is: the slow, 10-15 year decline of the technology or service into irrelevance.
I guess the title of this post should actually read, “The Slow 10-15 Year Descent Into Irrelevance of Device-Specific Mobile Applications Associated with a Brand That Do Not Perform a Specific Task or Purpose.”
That doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, does it?

As we enter into the second day of Lent, many Christians have taken to fasting. Many have elected to fast from Facebook, Twitter, television and other forms of technology.
Have you heard of anyone fasting from their cell phone?
It almost sounds silly, doesn’t it?
In the last decade, cell phones have transitioned from luxury to necessity. At least it has transitioned in our minds as we’ve been conditioned over time.
What if you were without your cell phone?
How would you react?

My daughter’s favorite possession is now her Nook Color tablet.
She had initially wanted a Nintendo 3DS, and had shown enviable discipline in saving enough money to purchase one outright. But, after checking out her mom’s Nook Color and weighing the additional costs of purchasing games in addition to the device itself, she started to waver.
First, it was the games.
We are fairly well invested in Android games. I had lived vicariously through Amazon’s Free Android App of the Day promotion and had amassed quite the flotilla of time-wasting apps: Cut the Rope, Angry Birds, Monopoly and Enchanted Forest — all free to her.
She could also browse the web, and since the NC serves as a wi-fi tablet, it allows us to control her internet usage. Toss in Netflix, free word processor software and calculator for homework and she had pretty much made up her mind. When she found out that a refurb could be had for significantly less than the 3DS, she was sold. She had one request of SuperGeek Dad: she wanted access to her Kindle eBooks, and her electronic Bible.
