You can learn a lot by looking back at old advertising.
It’s interesting to see what used to work, what still works today, and what would never work anymore due to cultural changes.
Chemcraft Atomic
Atomic energy has never been … safer?
Phil A. O’Fish – 1976 McDonald’s
Phil A. O’Fish is such a sell-out. I’ve always found using fish to sell fish or chickens to sell chicken to be awkward. Cows selling chicken, that’s just smart.
Natural Wonder
Some things never change. It’s all about choices.
International Harvester Refrigerator
“The most exciting idea in refrigerators since the ice cube.”
Wow.
Canada Dry Ginger Ale
Love the made-up word.
Vespa
This looks like a trip to the ER waiting to happen.
Chanel
Other than being an old newspaper clip, not a big change, here.
Pall Mall
Just hanging out … in a war.
Pepsi
False advertising?
Electrolux
The history of vacuum cleaner ads: Vacuum Cleaner Ads Suck
Rowntree’s
Wow.
Rinso
It took a while before I knew what this ad was advertising.
Hershey’s Baking Chocolate and Cocoa
Classic.

International Harvester’s made-up word is even better than Canada Dry’s:
“They’re Femineered!”
It looks like they even took out a registered trademark for it.
