We know how to stay awake: Coffee.
So, how do you keep your PC awake during those long (and sometimes overnight) downloads?
COFFEE!
Before you start pouring a cup of hot joe into your PC and waste good cup of coffee, let’s settle down with the semantics.
Coffee, pictured right, is for you. Coffee, pictured left, is for your PC.
Coffee will perk up your machine every time it try’s to take a nap. You don’t have to fiddle around with your power settings to keep it running during long downloads, just install Coffee.
Coffee offers a simple solution in the form of a temporary sleep/hibernation blocker for Windows PCs. Run it, point it at the network adapter that data is flowing through, and give it a minimum data threshold before it shuts off and allows the computer to sleep or hibernate on its own.
Once this cup of open source is poured into your PC, simply launch the app, select your network adapter and select your download threshold. For example, if you select 150KBs, Coffee will keep your PC awake as long as the download rate stays above 150KBs. Once it dips below, your normal PC power settings will take over.
So, when your download completes at 3AM, only your PC will get a few hours of rest, you can go to sleep at a reasonable hour.
You can download Coffee from SourceForge or visit the Coffee website where you can join the project, get the source code, and get a little support.
Coffee’s up!
