Most of the time I ignore Verizon iPhone rumors because they usually start in some corner of the Interwebs and make their way to some forum site and then to random tech blogs and that’s usually where it ends. The mainstream media never writes it up because there is no way for them to verify such rumors.
However, this latest news appears in Business Week which is much more legit:
Very soon, maybe by Valentine’s Day, Apple (AAPL) will likely host one of its splashy product introductions to announce a new version of the iPhone that works on Verizon’s (VZ) network. Customers are expected to stampede to the new pairing, leaving AT&T (T), until now the exclusive U.S. distributor of the iPhone, with an enormous problem.
Further down it says:
Apple’s introduction of an iPhone for use on Verizon’s network will come sometime after the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January, according to a person familiar with Apple’s plans who is not authorized to discuss them publicly.
Frankly, I think it comes down to how much Verizon talks up their Android line of phones at CES. If all we hear is “Droid, Droid, Droid” the entire time, coupled with talk of their 4G network, then we may still be waiting around longer. But if the talk is focused largely on the 4G network, well then look out.
So, here are two important questions:
- If you are an iPhone owner but hate AT&T, will you make the switch?
- If you are a Verizon customer already and have an Android device, will you switch?
I have to say that I would be very tempted. The iPhone is a sweet device. However, my Android ties in so easily with Google of which I am big user that it might be tough.

I’m an iPhone user and although I don’t hate AT&T, I would switch to Verizon simply for better coverage. Ever since the iPhone 4 came out and AT&T allowed people to renew without penalty until the end of 2010, it seemed obvious there would be a new carrier in 2011. I’ll wait and see.

I currently have a Droid X with Verizon. If they ever get the iphone I would probably make the jump.
