Instagram have been making big moves recently, and the number of people using there service seems to be growing massively as time goes on.
Many developers have been sitting and waiting for Instagram to release an API, and now finally the time has come!
On their new developer page Instagram say:
The first version of the Instagram API is an exciting step forward towards making it easier for users to have open access to their data. With the Instagram API, our goal is to make it easier for developers to create interesting and innovative ways to browse the ever-growing volume of photos posted to Instagram every second.
While Instagram started as an iPhone app, our vision for what Instagram will become is much larger. As the number of photos uploaded grows, we believe that the Instagram community is building a rich visual history of the world. It’s only natural to find ways of encouraging talented developers to build interesting ways to explore the data.Additionally, we want to make it easy for developers to find ways of making Instagram more useful to the quickly growing number of users that sign up for Instagram every day.
Instragram’s new API will serve photos in the following ways:
- Users – Every time a specific Instagram user uploads a photo, the developer is notified
- Tags – When a photo is uploaded with a specific tag the developer is notified
- Location – If a photo is geo-tagged with a certain location the developer is notified
- Geography – When a photos is geo-tagged within a certain radius of a location the developer is notified
Instagram have setup a cool demo page which shows off the Geography feature of their API.
Given the amount of people that seem to be adopting Instagram as their main photo sharing app, I think that this API has some huge potential for making some really cool stuff.
Exciting times!
