Inspiration: Photography

February 20, 2010
by John Saddington

How do you get “inspired” to create the things that you do?

Although I pull from all types of things both naturally-created and man-made, I have found that photography inspires me a lot.

I just love the idea of something mechanical built for capturing the natural.

So, what’s been inspiring you lately?

In the context of development, I think it’s easy to look to other sites or applications to drive inspiration.

I’ve been trying to branch out a bit and let various styles of music, certain scenes in, say, movies, or various print drive inspiration.

I’m not a designer, but I like to tinker with that kinda stuff.

On the photography front, I look for different things. Lately, there are two photographers that I have been checking out that inspire me. Not only for their photographic work, but for their willingness to share info and their totally awesome websites (built on WordPress of course!).

That cake is inspiring me to go eat lunch right about now. (I’m on mountain time, so you can pick your jaw up off the the keyboard east coasters) πŸ˜‰

Someone threw this question out on Twitter last night- I said reading Calvin & Hobbes. Calvin’s imagination makes me dream a little more. It just reminds me of what I DON’T need to be imaginative.

I also take a power nap. I learned this in college and it’s sweet: Lay down (on a desk, a couch, the floor- where ever) and hold something like a pen in your hand. When you drop the pen you’ll wake up and be refreshed. It works. I don’t know how, but it does. I do it all the time.

I’m also inspired by my 11-month old son, Jax. His sense of wonder and amazement with the simple (a wooden spoon for example) is so cool. From the mouths of babes FTW! πŸ™‚

Thanks man! It’s short for Jaxon. You have my permission to name a kid with it. πŸ˜‰

I’m loving listening to a bunch of music lately. As music is my main creative thing, I like hearing what people are doing.

But in all honesty, any art can do that for me. A picture, a song, a painting, a poem, it all works. Even nice code! πŸ˜‰

I’ve been inspired for the last 1-2 months by some special verses of the Bible. Usually when I read a verse, I kinda imagine an ‘image’ of the verse in my mind, and then creativity goes.

do you ever jot those images down or do something with it?

I might try sketching them on a piece of paper, then I think how can I draw something similar in Photoshop. When I have a similar image in Photoshop, I add text, and then I always get many ideas about how to use it.

I’ve been watching a lot of demo reels of motion designers lately and seeing how they transition from one scene to the next. I love creative transitions.

Good creative writing inspires me like nothing else. I’m a sucker for a great short story or clever (not overly artsy) poem. I have Shel Silverstein/a> to thank for that, I guess. Grew up on his books.
