Yesterday Instagram announced a new mobile app! While it’s currently only available for iOS, I imagine it will hit the other devices shortly.
It’s called Hyperlapse and it’s designed to create awesome time lapse videos quickly and easily. Just open the app and start recording. You don’t even need an Instagram account!
Here’s a closer look:

Like I said, it’s really easy. Just open the app and start recording like you would record any video using your mobile device—even while you’re moving. Hyperlapse stabilizes your video giving it a cinematic effect. This makes speeding it up look far more smoother than it would normally be.
Instagram had all sorts of photo effects, whereas Hyperlapse has one effect: speed.
Here’s how it works:
“To shoot a video with Hyperlapse:
- Tap the circle at the bottom of the app. While recording, you’ll see a timer on the left that shows how long your recording is and a timer on the right that shows how long your video will be once it’s sped up.
- Tap the circle again to stop recording.
- Use the slider to choose a speed for your video. By default, speed will be set at 6x.
- Tap the checkmark in the top right to save the video to your device’s camera roll. When you shoot a time lapse video with Hyperlapse, your footage will be instantly stabilized to give it a cinematic look.”
After shooting your video footage, you can adjust your video from 1x speed to a maximum of 12x faster than the original. Once your video is ready, you can share your new video via Instagram or Facebook. You don’t need an Instagram account and the video is saved on your local device, so I imagine we’ll be seeing some pretty cool videos showing up all over the web as everyone becomes familiar with Hyperlapse.

“Usually, capturing even a brief tracking shot requires intricate choreography between where you’ll move with the camera and what your subjects will be doing when you film them. Time-lapse set-ups are even more intense, requiring a camera be set up on a track and programmed to move at a steady speed. Both of those art forms are hardly spontaneous, and spontaneity is supposed to be Instagram’s calling card.
Hyperlapse, by contrast, let’s you create a tracking shot in less than a minute.” — Wired
I am excited to see what kind of awesome Hyperlapse videos church creatives are going to make!
You can download Hyperlapse from Instagram from iTunes—and those of who don’t use iOS will be anxiously waiting!

Just curious what the differences between this and the already installed Time Lapse on iPhone 5s would be if any?

I think it’s the stabilization.

This looks pretty cool! I think I’m going to make a series like Jimmy Fallon’s test…just hyperlapse vids of me eating stuff – true art 🙂
Eric Dye says
I think you mean HIGH art—LOL!

Love the speed slider. Anyone with artistic talent could use this to record the drawing of a verse or other content with artistic flair (sort of stop-motion type stuff). A recap of missions trips or other activities might also go well. I was thinking it would be a neat way for short-term missions trips to provide creative daily updates of work they are doing. Pastors could do the same… “A Day in the Life of a Pastor”. I’m more interested in finding ideas for some missional applications — things that would be of interest and communicate the gospel to not-yet-believers.

Great ideas!
