I just finished having a conversation with my 6-year-old son about having good manners. But his generation offers a unique concept. He was making fun of a girl’s writing on a video and his comment was “she can’t hear me.”
Now take this to the next level of text-based communication or video gaming. If you are playing single player and clearly dominating easy mode, can you mock them? What about robots or Alexa, should we say please and thank you to them?
The “for it” argument is a theological one: we should not have hatred, vile, or any other sinful things in our hearts at any time. When we talk in our own time, in our quiet place, we are our most real self. If we curse, mock, or sin then, it is truly a reflection of our heart.
The “against it” argument is to not confuse children by personifying technology, especially when it is already confusing because Alexa feels so real.
I think Axios’ video below perfectly sums it up. After you watch it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on where you land in the comments below.
