Google Webmaster Tools… are you using them?
Another reason why you should use Google’s 404 Widget is that if you do in fact have broken links, having that widget on your blog will not only auto-populate the search field with a relevant search for your users, but it will also kick back any posts or content that the user should have reached.
For example, as you can see I have a number of “Not Found” issues with this current blog.
Click this broken link here that I used to have and you’ll see that my 404 Widget gives them the right link that they should have jumped to.
Click this broken link here and you’ll see it auto-populate the Google 404 Widget with the right keywords to get them to the right spot.
Neat, huh? So, your turn…!
Three things to do:
- Fix them. That’s the first priority.
- Understand how they are being created. Typically it’s your fault for not linking properly.
- Create a 404 Page to catch them with Google’s 404 Widget.
Ok, go!
