Google Chrome has a new icon.
If you’re a Chrome user, you’ll see the new icon in the next coming weeks (no need to check your Chrome version just yet).
Here’s some of the creative juice from Google:
Since Chrome is all about making your web experience as easy and clutter-free as possible, we refreshed the Chrome icon to better represent these sentiments. A simpler icon embodies the Chrome spirit — to make the web quicker, lighter, and easier for all.
Really?
No, I don’t think so.
It’s about design, keeping up with trends, and not looking old and stale. This verbage from the Chrome blog sounds great from a PR side, but it’s all about keeping up with creative trends.
The web osculates from one trend to another.
Trends go from:
- White // Black
- 3D high gloss // Simple-flat-clean lines.
- Flash, Flash, Flash!!! // No Flash. We hates it.
Of course, there are the trends we never want to see come back again.
Ever.
- Music automatically playing.
- Nested frames.
- Flash, Flash, Flash!!!
I like the new look. I’m ready to see my shortcut link icons change.
Besides, I think it will better “embody the Chrome spirit” on my computer.

I love the new logo, also it looks like something you could make using SVG and have the chrome engine render it instead of it being an raster image.
Eric Dye says
A nice change of pace.

and what the next step? a plain blue circle? it everything keeps going simpler and simpler, soon the icons and graphics will be one color rectangles.
Eric Dye says
… or plain text.

Eric Dye says
Google “ascii art” and watch the Google logo change.

I agree, nice change.
…still reminds me of Simon Says…
Eric Dye says
That’s awesome.
It really does look Simon Says!

Minimalistic logo design trends… what do you think? Everyone seems to be doing it! I see everything in 8bit by 2020. Speaking of things everyone seems to do … flash is so cool! Some can do what they need to do on a PC… maybe it just takes more patience… and less money 🙂 Never used a Mac or any device that can’t play Flash… Don’t get me wrong, not because I don’t want to! The boss (ie. wife) would kill me for spending any more than I already do on technology… Maybe then I could understand your pain! Maybe you guys can buy me an i{Whatever} for my birthday! How else would a fellow brother know what the difference is! LOL -deprived (posted using Chrome for Windows)

No. Deprived would be replying with IE6 😉
