On a recent discipleship course I was attending, there was a sentence in the material that struck me:
The Bible and prayer are two ways to hear from God.
It’s kind of an obvious thing, but the sort of stuff that we can not really apply in our lives. We know God speaks through the Bible, and we want to hear from God…but do we turn to his word?
Well, there are various reasons why we don’t but easy of access can be a big one. For some people, reading just isn’t the easiest thing. It could be because of eyesight of specific learning difficulties. However, it would be bad if we just wrote these people off as being unable to learn from scripture. Luckily there is a new Kickstarter project that might help. Even better, it can also boost your scriptural habits even if you enjoy reading the Bible.
What is Dwell?
Dwell is a future app (starting out as iOS only) that focuses on listening to scripture rather than reading. They point to the fact that until the 19th century (with widespread literacy), this was the way most people took in scripture.
The app uses voice artists to read scripture in an authentic way, not a monotonous drone or booming radio voice.
It contains original music and artwork design to fit these playlists as well as an interface that contains many common ways you might want to browse scripture including
- listening plans
- stories
- passages
- playlists (on different topics)
- and a traditional chapter and verse layout
This is supported by a subscription (yup, subscriptions are the future of app pricing) to support the development of the app and adding further audio for more scriptures (it isn’t launching with the full Bible, unfortunately).
Should You Kickstart It?
If you are a fan of audiobooks and podcasts but find the audio recordings in your current Bible app a bit dull, then this is an app you should definitely consider backing. After all, there is a lifetime plan that means you can pay once and use indefinitely. It may also be worth checking out if you have a great audio scripture choice already.
