YOU have a creative idea.
Go ahead, try and hide, but I know you have one.
You have an idea that only you are capable of having. Your unique experiences and perspectives have molded you in such a way that you, and only you, can create it.
So, what’s the different between those who are “creative” and those who are “not”?
Doing.
Being creative has more to do with taking risks and making mistakes than it has to do with having talent and succeeding in your endeavors.
Here’s an expert from the 99%’s about page (Behance‘s research side) that really salidifies this concept:
Taking its name from Thomas Edison’s famous quote that “genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration.”
True story.
I love that concept. It’s about the 99%!
You’ve got the idea, you just don’t have the gumption.
So, what’s your excuse?
I’m sure you’ll find it in the following list (I found mine) of the “10 Most Common Excuses For NOT Making Ideas Happen” on Open Forum by The Behance Team:
- I don’t have enough time.
Time doesn’t grow on trees. If you don’t have it now, you won’t have it later. Making time is hard work. - I’m afraid of the competition.
“As Seth Godin has said, competition validates your idea by creating a category. It also lights a fire under your ass.” - It’s not the right moment to do it.
This is what happened to Twitter. When it first launched in 2000, it was too early and failed. The rest is history. If that’s failure, I’ll take that any day! - I’ve got to pay the bills.
“VC Fred Wilson has been known to say, ‘The three most harmful addictions are heroin, carbohydrates, and a monthly salary.‘ Once we’ve achieved a modicum of success and stability, we’ll do almost anything we can to hang onto it.” - I have to plan it out properly first.
Because success can be planned? Doh! Had I know it was that easy, I would have started planning a long time ago! - I’m afraid of failure.
The “F”-word is so vulgar. - The idea isn’t polished enough yet.
Were the Wright Brothers ever concerned with the paint job? - I need to do market research.
People lie. - I can’t overcome the inertia.
Start with small goals. Baby steps. - I’m not inspired.
Obviously. That’s because you haven’t started doing anything. The inspiration will come after the perspiration.
So, what’s your idea? What’s your dream? What’s your vision?
What’s been your excuse?
Most importantly, what are you going to do about it?

Eric (awesome name by the way). Thanks so much for this post. It just reaffirms what I’ve been feeling for a long time and actually wrote a similar post about this just yesterday. Went live today with a link back to you as a little hat tip…. http://www.witharmshigh.com/2011/04/18/when-you-should-but-you-dont-but-you-should/
