I don’t think we can look at it in terms of “importance” so much as it is just a new era in American culture and business.
The industrial/manufacturing age has been replaced by the service age. I cringe when I hear people and politicians talking about how we need to get our “manufacturing base back.” We’re not getting it back. It’s over. Just like the farming industry ended for the most part at the turn of the 20th century.
We are now a service based economy and people need to adapt to that to survive and thrive.
