Put down that 20-sided die and grab your Magical Item Compendium, kids, it’s time for Ask 8BIT!
You now have 2 options when asking the 8BIT Team a question:
- You can either ask a question and get a response via the comment section below.
- Or, you can ask a question and request it be answered via rich media (audio, video, etc). You can even ask a specific member of the team, if you’d like.
It’s been fun answering your questions via the 8BIT Podcast! Keep them coming!
And if we don’t get to your question, don’t hesitate to ask again.

Hey, I’m looking for some advice and direction for online project management.
The creative team at my church has been using an online forum from the 90’s to communicate and I’ve finally persuaded them that it’s time to change into something more fitting for the task. I was actually right on the cusp of launching them into Google Wave right as the announcement came down that Google was stopping development on it. So…now I’m looking for plan B.
The requirements:
1. Free (or very cheap, preferably non subscription based)
2. User friendly – they may have the title of “creative” but they’re not all very savvy with new tech
3. Embedded media and/or apps – one of the things I loved about Google wave was being able to embed youtube videos, pictures, and a myriad of apps pretty easily.
Not required:
1. chat or live typing feature
any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions?

I know you’re “Ask[ing] 8Bit”, but thought I would chime in with a solution I’ve currently got going –
If you’re team is online enough to use Google Wave, you should definitely take a look at using the Google Apps suite. It’s easy enough to set up, and I’m pretty sure has all of the functionality you might need.
We use Google Docs for specific events, and it has collaborative editing, and the interface is at least as simple as Wave. They also have Pages, Email, etc, integrated (specific apps are configurable to NOT be accessible, if you so choose).
Definitely give it another look, if you did in the past before getting to Wave.

Great question! You’ve no doubt heard of some of these, but I’ll just brain dump some tools of note:
* Basecamp
* Team Lab
* TeamBox
* ActiveCollab
These are software specific but may be adaptable:
* Trac
* JIRA
Lastly, consider looking into a CMS like Drupal or Joomla, they may have plugins or templates that get you enough of the features you require, while maintaining the price you desire.
