April Fools’ Day Tech Pranks

April Fools’ Day Tech Pranks

March 27, 2020
by Chris Wilson

It’s almost April fools’ day, so here are some great April Fools’ day tech pranks that you can play on your colleagues. Though, you may have a long way to go to beat Jim’s pranks on Dwight:

Rick Roll

There are several ways you can do this prank. The first is the classic sending a mysterious YouTube link with an innocent looking title (which turns out to be Rick Astley’s Never Going to Give You Up). A second way (that my brother played on me) is to add it a Chromecast queue. Also you can use the Spotify connect app to take control of someone’s music system.

Haunted House via Home Automation

A slightly more extravagant remote control prank is to set up some home automation for a haunted house effect. For example, adding smart lights so you can remotely turn them off, or turn all the lights red. Playing spooky sounds via a discreet Bluetooth speaker (like a knock on the door). If you really want to push the boat out, get one of those remote control door or window blind tools.

Broken Phone Screen

A much easier prank is to create a fake broken phone screen and place it on someone’s phone. You can find a simple wallpaper here, but it’s even better if you take the persons wallpaper and add an effect on top. Of course, you’ll have to get into their phone first.

Change the Language

You could change the language on your victims phone or computer. If they know their way through settings, this will probably be very easy to correct, if not…well this could take a while.

Auto Misscorrect

Change some commonly spelled words to misspelled alternatives in the phone or computer’s dictionary.
This will drive them nuts as they try to type the word correctly until they figure it out.

Crazy Mouse or Keyboard

If you are in an office with people, add a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard to your colleagues computer and take control of their computer.

Add a Terrible Alarm

Another prank I learned from my other brother was when he took my sister’s phone (back before smartphones) and she said that it didn’t have any games…so he made his own by adding an alarm for 2am. My sister loves her sleep, she did not love this alarm.

This is a great way to get ahead of the pranks on April Fools’ day.

Keep It Fun

Although pranks can be great fun for everyone involved, they can get out of hand and some people won’t see the funny side. When you plan your pranks, make sure it’s in good humor and the victim will see the funny side (also expect payback).

Have you pulled any good pranks on your colleagues? What are your ideas for April fools’ day tech pranks?
