A friend of mine passed this web app, based out of Austin, TX (I HEART Austin!) and I thought it was a great example of taking “social sharing” to the next level, IRL!
Essentially what Acts of Sharing does provide a way for you to share (or virtually rent) the things you own in a very simple bartering system. As they put it:
Acts of Sharing was created to enable a cultural shift toward sustainable living and richer community by empowering people to share their possessions in a simple and effective way.

Getting an account was easy and in moments I could see my dashboard and could start trading stuff:
