My iPad’s name is “Doug.”
He’s been with me for several months now and he’s been able to hold his own in most of the “harmful” situations he bumps into.
But, all the same, I like the idea of having a good durable cover on it for the unexpected times of clumsiness. I have three young boys, 1, 3, and 5, who are capable of maneuvering through Doug’s cool apps like anyone else but they lack the understanding of how much daddy would have to spend in order to replace it, so a good cover is necessary.
I also carry it with me everywhere and obviously I need to have a good cover on it. Check out this one:
Recently my brother in Portland started working for a small wood working company called Substrata.
He told me about an iPad cover they were producing which was handmade and able to protect the iPad better than most covers. They had already made an impression on the apple market with their iPhone covers that were handmade out of wood.
I was skeptical of the practicality of having a hand made wood cover for Doug but the novelty of it intrigued me so I began to look into it. Take a look at the pictures and see how awesome it looks.
Since the iPad is truly a work of art it seems fitting to have such a handmade work of art to go along with it. In addition, WIRED magazine recently did a review of several iPad covers and found Substrata’s cover to be more durable than most.
I’m still not sure if I would consider it a “need” but it sure would be cool to get a nice coat for Doug for winter.
So, have you named your iPad? What is he/she wearing these days?

That is incredible.

That’s what I thought.

That’s what I thought!

I keep thinking that.

Over 30 of my friends teamed up and bought me a shiny new iPad for my birthday a couple days ago.
I named her “Paddie.”
Right now, she’s in her natural state without a case. And I’m going to keep it that way : )

“paddie” That is awesome! It’s nice to know I’m not alone.

Mine is Algernon. And I have a Targus case that works quite well. Only complaint is that it is a bit bulky and heavy. But the wooden one suffers the same I would imagine.

The cases are made to wrap the ipad very tightly so the wood only adds an addition 1/2 inch total on the width and height so roughly a quarter inch of protection on each surface and probably an inch total on the sides or 1/2 inch each side. The weight of the case in minimal although I have not held one for extended periods of time. I would be suprised if it were more than a pound. The wood species would play a factor into the overall weight though. I could take more pecise measurments and weights at the shop sometime if anyone is really interested. Great questions. Thanks for the recognition Ben.

I don’t have a name for my iPad but, on the spot, I’d have to say its- no, her, name would be Connie. She’s awefully convenient. She’s currently dressed in black. Military black. Otterbox Defender. I’ve got a little guy too who can be clumsy. It’s easy to be careless when you haven’t a care.

To be durable, we’re not talking balsa. So, I wonder how much additional weight one of these would add (thinking of long reading sessions, etc.)?
Henry says
Oh, and my iPad doesn’t have a name… yet.
