Do you know the dangers of migrating a WordPress site from one domain name to another?
Whether it be changing your entire domain name or migrating from a localhost install to the live web, you can’t just make a couple SQL tweaks and call it good.
Here’s why:
“First of all, storing the domain name for your web application in the database is a really bad idea. For whatever reason WordPress does this. It also serializes content before it’s inserted. So moving from one domain to another, most commonly from development to staging to production, can be a hassle. Two major things must happen for it to be a seamless migration; Find & replace the domain and fix the serialized url’s containing the old domain.”
I’ve personally dealt with this using a different solution (you can read about that here), but I’ve since found an online solution that’s really slick.
Peach
Peach is easy, but mostly awesome.
When you’re ready to migrate or make your change, simply drag and drop your SQL file and you’re good to go!
If you’re switching up your domain name without moving to a different server, folder or WordPress install, I recommend sticking with my before-mentioned solution. Otherwise, give Peach a try!
