Yes, this story from Mashable had me smile (and cringe) as I know this feeling pretty personally. I’ve had my fair share of non-paying clients and it really sucks.
I’ve never done anything like this, but I have “turned off” the site for a bit to get things moving. Same difference? Not really since I didn’t impact their SEO, but still.
Tough call.

Wow! That takes some… I don’t know if I would openly humiliate someone like that. You wouldn’t be giving them much of a chance for fixing their error and moving on.

I would consider turning off a site in extreme cases, but certainly not hijacking their site in the name of payment.
