Well, I would say that Raspberry Pi sounds like something rather delicious!
I guess that it is, although I wouldn’t advise that you put it in your mouth! :O
Actually, Raspberry Pi is a UK foundation, set up to encourage the study of computer science.
Raspberry Pi wants to make computer science as accessible as possible. So, they are currently developing a mini computer which they are hoping will cost just $25! WHAT!
From Raspberry Pi:
We plan to develop, manufacture and distribute an ultra-low-cost computer, for use in teaching computer programming to children. We expect this computer to have many other applications both in the developed and the developing world.
Our first product is about the size of a USB key, and is designed to plug into a TV or be combined with a touch screen for a low cost tablet. The expected price is $25 for a fully-configured system.
Dang! I love this! Just think of the things that you could do if you could buy a micro computer for just $25. A computer of this size is something that I have been dreaming of for a while!
The proposed spec is as follows:
- 700MHz ARM11
- 128MB of SDRAM
- OpenGL ES 2.0
- 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode
- Composite and HDMI video output
- USB 2.0
- SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot
- General-purpose I/O
- Open software (Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python)
Check out a couple of pictures of the prototype:
I really love the idea of some of the specs, and there’s no doubt that as the years go by, devices of this size will be built and will have even higher specs avaliable, which will be VERY awesome.
So, here is the question for you. If you had access to these badboys for $25 a pop – how would you use them to change the world? Or at the very least, your world?
