John 2:3
When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
Jesus’ Miracle
I was reading up on this passage for yesterday’s chapel service because I was giving the message. What better place to read from the Bible than an interaction between Jesus and His mother, Mary? I have read this passage maybe twenty times and so I knew all the little details: this is Jesus’ first miracle noting that Mary knew what Jesus could do, this miracle was to continue the celebration of the wedding and could be used to begin the celebration of Christ’s coming, and it was the beginning of three years that would end in a spectacular tragedy that would alter the world for ever more.
What Was Mary Thinking?
I love simply reading about Mary, her bold faith that is inspiring for every Christian. She accepts her destiny of a virgin birth to God, stays at the Cross through out everything, and in these verses is bold enough to tell Jesus what He needed to do. Makes you think, did she have to discipline Him? How many times did she worry for Him when He was a child? Great youth group questions!
It Was More Than The Wine
I have always wondered why it was important to put this miracle in the Bible. My dad offered up the explanation that this started His ministry and I just accepted it. But reflecting on this text for Mother’s Day, I have come to another conclusion. Because Jesus listened to His mother, He fulfilled one of the commandments and was beginning validating His Godliness. Mary did not make it an ultimatum, but He knew the promise to fulfill the old law and thus began the journey to a new covenant.
Amazing how the faith of His mother is the beginning to hope and redemption for all people. How will your faith impact the kingdom of God?
