It was inevitable.
After the meteoric success of his best-selling book, Platform, and the insane annual release of Best Year Ever, speaker and entrepreneur, Michael Hyatt, has brought the marketing world to a whole new level. In fact, this level is so new, he had to build it himself.
You might know Michael from his time as the CEO of Thomas Nelson, or his popular blog, podcast, courses, books, cooking show, cat memes, and purchase of Evernote. Many of his friends know that behind this manic content creator lies a simple man who likes to work with his hands. And a few power tools.
Home Depot Sightings
Lately, Hyatt has been sighted at the local Home Depot (picture above) hauling plywood, 2x4s, extension cords, and duct tape away in his Tesla TBD (a pickup truck prototype).
One anonymous fanboy, cleverly disguised in an orange apron, reportedly witnessed Hyatt in the paint department selecting a signature combination of red and white. The social media magnate was later seen carrying two 5-gallon buckets in each hand and whistling This Little Light of Mine.
After following the #HomeDepotHyatt hashtag for a few weeks, curiosity won out and I traveled to Franklin, TN to investigate. Normally an uninhibited promoter, Hyatt’s apparent silence was puzzling. It was time for the truth to come out. What I found was astounding.
My Findings
There, in the middle of the town square, was Michael Hyatt in grubby work clothes and a tool belt putting the finishing touches on a massive wooden platform. The result was a masterpiece rising 3-stories high and covering 5,000 square feet.
Structurally, the platform resembled a giant red box with the word “PLATFORM” painted in white on each side. Upon closer inspection I discovered that every word from the Platform book had been carved repeatedly to cover the entire surface like an intricate mosaic.
Atop the perimeter of the larger-than-life platform were speakers, antenna, sound boards, and satellite dishes of every shape and size. A lone retro microphone standing in the center.
Hyatt slide down a ladder firefighter style, packed up his tools in the Tesla TBD, and walked over to stand next to me on the sidewalk. Facing the Platform we silently nodded in mutual admiration of his handiwork.
Barely containing a wry smile I failed to resist temptation and asked, “So what’s the monthly fee?”
Hyatt laughed and replied, “You’ve gotta subscribe to my mailing list to find out.”

Ummm. I must take issue with this article. After being married to the man for 37 years, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen him with a tool belt on. 😉
