At the end of this month, I will not have a job at my current employment. But thanks to the effort I have put into social media to this point, I have a job lined up for me come July 1. Yesterday’s tips to take your social media accounts from good to great really are what I have been experimenting since starting this blog. That being said, there are a couple of things you need to know if you also want to try to get a job in social media.
- Know Your Company
One of the tips from yesterday is to prioritize your social networks, but you have to know your audience to do so. This process may take quite a bit of time to do so along with trial and error. It was not until I had invested some $100 in Facebook ads, hundreds of hours developing the page with custom apps, and building the fan base to 750 before I decided that it was not the place for bloggers. Even then, I dedicated a significant amount of time between Twitter and Google+ before I realized the power that could be had at Google+. You may not come to a conclusion quickly. - If You Want A Social Media Job Now, You Are A Year Behind
The adage of needing to know more than just what is successful today, but what will be successful tomorrow is true with social media. It is ever changing and a strong understanding of the ins and outs of social media is needed to be great at it. Right now, Facebook looks like a very successful social media network where many businesses are finding success. But if you have been studying it long enough, you know that they are currently in a tight spot because they do not have a great revenue stream and are starting to sacrifice ingenuity for profit. That does not come naturally, but instead takes time in the business. - Display Your Work
Simply knowing what makes for great social media is not enough. You need to also put in the effort to display your talents. For us, that meant writing several social media books, helping others in my organization for the sake of improving it, and knowing the statistics that directly applied to their endgame in social media. Honestly, in the heart of all of the social media research, this part is kind of easy. But to forget to do it means that you may miss out on a great opportunity. It’s not selfish, it is being an advocate for yourself.
For sure this is a dream job. What would be your dream job?
