So you’ve just finished installing WordPress and setting up your favorite WordPress Theme.
Now what? Are you done? No!
Here are a few basic and post-install plugins that I personally would recommend:
- Akismet – This should be a no brainer. Install this to help ensure that you’re not bogged down with spam comments. Download Akismet Here!
- Google XML Sitemaps – This plugin will create and more importantly re-create an xml sitemap that google will use to help index your site better. Download Google XML Sitemap Here!
- WP-DBManager – The big deal with this plug in is that you can schedule backups of your database. This is great if you don’t have easy command line access to your website. Download WP-DBManager Here!
- WP Smush It – This plugin is awesome. This is a “Set it and Forget it” type addition to your site. Of course we’re all looking for faster load times on all of our properties and that is where this plugin comes into play. Smush.it takes your images and compresses them to their max. This plugin also lets you go back and smush images you have uploaded in the past. Download WP Smush.it Here!
What plugins do you find “mandatory” or most useful after your install?

Great list Gunnard
I hadn’t heard of that last plugin, but getting it now.
I usually install an RSS footer for ads and other such foolery.

WP Smush is new to me. I am using it now at my new site http://striveformaturity.com.
I don’t now if this is a coincidence or not but the plugin didn’t work for scheduled posts, only on published posts.
