Everything We Build On the Internet Doesn’t Have to Last [Podcast #256]

March 31, 2019
by The ChurchMag Podcast

The phrase “Everything we build on the internet doesn’t have to last” has some interesting connotations.

Does that refer to the mission? The tools being used? The nature of digital content?

We discuss this — and a little more — on this week’s podcast.

If you want to join the conversation, talk to us via Twitter @ChurchMag using #cmagcast, by email at [email protected], or tell us here and we’ll share your comment, question, and thoughts on an upcoming episode.

Captain Marvel (Spoil-Free) [Saturday Morning Review]

March 30, 2019
by Jeremy Smith

Captain Marvel is the latest in the Marvel Cinematic University series as we head into Avengers: Endgame. It should be noted up front this is not a full review as I feel there are several needed comments that will spoil this article and we are going to keep the spoil-free expectations.

This is the perfect setup for Avengers: Endgame. I foresee this not being the best Marvel movie this year, but it might not be the worst either. I hear story after story of fathers taking their daughters to the movie, inspired and proud to be a nerd when their child decides they want to be Captain Marvel. Of course, this comes well after Wonder Woman, so it might very well late in the game with that.

That Helps Them Avoid Failure [Building A Storybrand Book Club: Chapter 9]

Storybrand Book Club

by Blessing Mpofu

[This post is part of a Book Club book series where we take a deep dive into Building A StoryBrand by Donald Miller. To check out all of the posts, view the table of contents here]

This has been an interesting exercise for me. As we’ve worked our way through the book I’ve had many scenarios I’ve thought about the application form. From a business setting, which StoryBrand is for, right through to church comms. Not only that, but it’s also made me think through how well we communicate Christ’s message. Particularly for people exploring the Christian faith. Thus, on the church front, chapter 9 made for an intriguing read for me.

Not Everyone Should Code [Video]

March 27, 2019
by Jeremy Smith

This title might seem like clickbait, but interestingly, I’m going to stick with it. This is not a white man trying to make sure to avoid diversity in order to ensure I have a job. I still believe diversity in code will ultimately improve the overall code-base out there. The biggest reason, we need to attract those who bend towards programming because that ensures we will be working towards a better coding future.

Check out this video by PolyMatter that better explains this than I ever could.

How Fortnite Taught Me About Connecting With People

March 26, 2019
by Allison Dye

I teach a Sunday School class of mostly boys. Before we get into the lesson for the morning I like to ask each kid how their week was and invite them to share some of its highlights, as I pass out fruit gummies and little bottles of water. These highlights are more often than not, them sharing what happened in Fortnite. I doubt many grown-ups, their parents included, ever care about hearing of their Fortnite adventures.
