WordPress isn’t just a blogging platform.
It can be transformed into a serious CMS in the right hands.
I’ve heard criticisms about WordPress as a CMS, saying that it was too blog heavy. Ironically enough, I’ve seen sites add blogs that are sub-par, as they were trying to avoid the WordPress bloat.
Ironic.
One of the first things you can do to transform WordPress into a deeper CMS tool, is by creating Custom Post Types and Taxonomies, and there is an online tool that can help you do just that!
I wish I would have found this tool when I first started digging into this.
You see, I wanted to create a separate listing for Podcasts, while another client of mine wanted a News section, both apart from the blog. I needed the exact functionality of a blog, categories and everything, but I needed them listed separately. So, I created Custom Taxonomy and Post Types (tutorial in the works).
If you take a look at the WordPress Codex, Custom Taxonomies and Post Types can be a little overwhelming.
Using Gravity forms, Themergency (great name) created both a Taxonomy Code Generator and Custom Post Type Code Generator:
Answer the questions, complete with short definitions, and these two handy code generator’s will spit-out the code!

Where has this been? Great idea!

Total WIN. I love it.

Or just use a custom post type and taxonomy plugin such as custom post type ui and you’re off! Benefit is you can do all the above in the admin panel without ever leaving your site. A tutorial of this in action on a church site would be great to see!

This is very nice

Very.

Yay! Getting Closer!!!
Maybe this is what I have been looking for…
I would like the posts of my Christian book to look like one thing and posts about something else to look different.
Are custom postonomies the trick needed here? Can you even change the background with this?
Eric Dye says
Yes and yes.
They can get a little tricky, but this where the power of WordPress as a CMS really shines. Look for more posts about Custom Post Types in the near future.

I cannot wait – but I guess I’ll have to!

There’s a new tool named Hasty, which is much better and fast for creating shortcodes or custom post types.
