As a parent of a five-year-old boy, I know from experience how much kids love tablets. My son plays with my iPad all the time and he can easily select and play various games of his choice. He loves playing Angry Birds and he’s getting the hang of Airmail.
He was actually quite upset when the YouTube app disappeared with the latest iOS update, because it’s a lot harder for him to watch videos now. For him, using a tablet is completely intuitive. And we let him (though within healthy limits of course) because we can see it’s good for him and for his development.

Not everyone is happy with the amount of time kids spend behind a screen though. It’s interesting to see that a lot of the nominations for this year’s TOADY Award (Toys Oppressive and Destructive for Young Children – in short the worst toys of the year) are tablet and smart phone related. Granted, some of them are indeed unhealthy and unnecessary, but I can’t help but wonder if there’s an underlying bias against kids playing with tablets and gadgets here…
What do you think about kids and tablets, healthy or not?
