Yesterday a tweet from someone I trust popped up in my timeline saying I could get 15gb free online space. To be honest, I was a bit suspect and thought his account might have been hacked – but then he tweeted again saying it was legit and that ‘Copy’ was run by the well known security company Barracuda Networks, so I took a look!
Sure enough it was true, so I signed up and so far, I’m very impressed!
I’ve been a Dropbox user and fan for years – but hey more online cloud storage, yes please. (I’ve not really used Google Drive much as it’s a bit too ‘documenty’ for me, I just want somewhere to store stuff!)
Copy was an easy signup and sure enough I got 15gb free – but if someone signs up using your referral code (hint hint!), you BOTH get an extra free 5gb!
Like Dropbox, Copy has a (very) nice web interface and also apps for Mac (10.7+), Windows, Android & iOS. On computers it installs as a folder (like Dropbox) so you can easily dump files into it. On the mobile apps you view files as you need them (but can fav/star) them to save locally.
There’s all the file sharing options you’d expect (both public and sharing folders, etc.); but there’s also a nice secure file sharing option where you can email the link to someone.
As well as the free option, there are extra pay for storage with excellent prices – and also team/business versions.
So if you’re looking for some online cloud storage (or more online storage!) then check out Copy. (and if you want, feel free to use my referral code!)
Are you using Copy?
What other online cloud storage do you use?

I love dropbox and have been paying for an account there for quite a while. But I do appreciate free space. I signed up with your link, tweeted about it (on a unused twitter handle that I keep just for making announcements like that) and I ended up with 22GB in just a couple minutes.
It has a much more reasonable business plan than Dropbox (you pay for space not users). But there is virtually no faq or help. I sent an email to ask about details about versioning (a feature I love with Dropbox) and business user access (can you restrict access to certain users for security purposes).
I did like that it offered to sync files that I had on an external drive. A useful feature.

Thanks for using my referral Adam – looks like a very solid service.

I did a speed test between DropBox and Copy yesterday when I first got it. I used a 130MB QuickTime video. It finished uploading in 90 seconds to Copy. It took almost 4 minutes to DropBox. Whether that speed difference continues or not is to be seen, but that’s a huge difference in web-time. Granted, I have stupid-fast Internet from Comcast right now, so my speeds are better than average, but I image the times double when I’m back to my normal speed.
I also like the web UI and the Preference UI for Copy more than DropBox. DropBox’s website has started feeling cluttered and dated over the last year or two. Copy is still fairly clean. Not to mention Io’ve only accumulated 9GB on DropBox and already have almost 50GB for free on Copy. They say the 5GB bonus is for a limited time, so I’m spamming the heck out of all my networks to try to get more people to sign up.
I think it will be a great contender against DropBox, and it already blows away Box and Skydrive from what I’ve seen of those.
James Cooper says
It does indeed seem to have some really nice (and well thought through and designed) features. I really hope that upload speed stays 🙂

Thanks for sharing Copy – used the referral and passed it on although I did create my own referral code. I have mostly used Box as I have a 50gb free account on a great promo last year or so just by installing there app. Box.com has much better sharing and embedding for which I mostly use it. Along with Google Drive and Skydrive, I can now add Copy – that’s a lot of Cloud Storage. Be nice when Jolicloud http://drive.jolicloud.com/ adds Copy to it’s collection to enable a one stop access point to all these clouds although I found that there is a limit to what Joliclound (or at least the API’s) allows you to do especially with Box.
Will have a play to see if Copy does indeed “blow away” Box as you suggest Chris.
Chris Rouse says
My experience with Box was that it was pretty slow and had some weird file size restrictions. I didn’t spend a lot of time with it because there were several things that really frustrated me with it when I tried it out last year. Maybe it’s gotten better since then, but at the time it felt really limited for as much praise as I was seeing it get.

Yeh Box only allows 100mb uploads on the free account which isn’t overly helpful but I guess if I needed more I’d upgrade my account. The great thing about Box which I haven’t found yet with Copy or Dropbox is that they allow for embedding of the files which is great when your website is on a limited shared server.

I do know that you can use Dropbox to run WordPress, so I’m sure it allows such.
James Cooper says
I think it depends when you got your dropbox account as to what you can do with files in the public folders. A while back, they stopped new users being able to use links to files in the public folder as ‘proper/direct’ links.
I guess their servers where getting a bit hammered…
For low cost hosting for big files, check out Amazon S3.
Eric Dye says
Agreed. I’m using Amazon S3 for podcast audio–top notch.
James Cooper says
Thanks for using my code Al. Enjoy copy-ing!

Will help me get an extra 5 gigabyte as well, so it will be much appreciated.

Hello Dag (or should that be spammer…) I mean seriously, your email is ‘purespam123’!
Eric Dye says
LOL! Sorry, James, I couldn’t resist.
James Cooper says
What are you like?!?!?! 😉 But people, use Eric’s code now! I’m now at 255GB free space (which is bigger than the hard drive of the laptop I’m writing this comment on…)

Nice article. I switched to Copy.com from Google Drive. It’s much faster than Google Drive and Dropbox. And SugarSync is no longer free! If you use this link you start with 20 free gigs (and I get 5 gigs): http://copy.com?r=lJ3zo0
