Backstretch is a tight jQuery plugin that dynamically-resizes your background image of any webpage.
Basically, it takes any image and stretches with the users window. It’s also designed to load the page before the image loads, so your website visitors won’t have to wait for the background image to load before using your site.
Backstretch comes with a few extra options that make it stand-out from other background image resize solutions out there.
Backstretch
Backstretch can be used three different ways:
- Basic vanilla background image stretch.
- Background image stretch that displays multiple images as a slideshow.
- Assign background image stretch to click events.
Nice, right?
My mind is racing thinking about what cool things I could do with this gem!

Cool! If you just want a resizing bg image, you can do it with no js and one line of css using:
html: (straight under )
css:
.bg {
width: 100%;
position: absolute;
top: 0;
left: 0;
z-index: 1000;
}
Then make your #container (or what’s holding the content) z-index: 1001; or more!
James Cooper says
ok, doesn’t like html tags! so have an image tag with a class of ‘bg’ – that is all!
Eric Dye says
It’s magic!
