I hadn’t heard of the filmmaker Chris Neal before I got an email from him about his short film. He says he drew inspiration from a Reddit comment from a few years ago to tell a fairly well-known parable in a modern setting. With a great cast and high production value, his rendition of the parable is compelling. He tells the original story story of, “Today you, tomorrow me”.
Never in history have we had technology and tools we have now. We can tell great stories and have them broadcast far and wide without much effort. Storytelling is still one of the most compelling ways to communicate truth and challenge us. It is undermined, sometimes in favour of other ways of communication such as preaching.
Maybe more than shouting on social media or trying to preach at the world we should tell stories. Done well, they have a way of obliterating arguments and connecting us to our humanity and each other. They help us come to grips with the truth in a relatable way.
I love what Chris has done in this story. His choice of the Good Samaritan can be challenging for some. Which, of course, is what Jesus was doing when he first told the parable. I’ve said enough, maybe too much.
After wiping those tears… here are also a few snaps from BTS / the making.
Besides Today You, Tomorrow Me video you just watched you can connect with Chris’ on his website here and on Instagram and Vimeo.
Question: how much space for other forms of art does your church / team use emphasise as a way of preaching / communication
