This could be a godsend for the right ministry (both small and large) that has the technical chops to make it happen.
OpenVBX has launched their open source version of their popular phone system software to other organizations for free. The only “catch” is that you’re going to have to use their cloud-based system to connect, which will cost you a few pennies for the calls.
But otherwise it’s a neat opportunity:
Pretty neat, right?

Does anyone here know how this compares to FreePBX?

I’m no telcom guy, so someone else please correct me if I’m wrong.
Seems pretty similar to FreePBX, but without the cloud services. In other ways, this seems to be more akin to Google Voice than FreePBX…basically, a “private” Google Voice for your business…sort of. Seems like FreePBX does a lot of what they are doing though without some of the cloud restrictions.
My Ooma device just got fried at home by lightning a couple days ago so I’ve been scrambling to get it replaced so my wife (who likes landlines better than cellphones) has service again. I looked at PlugPBX, FreePBX on a plug computer, because it seemed intriguing (and open source of course), but ended up just buying another Ooma device as I don’t have time to learn and configure a new system at the moment. Also, looks like Gizmo5 and Google Voice integration might get easier soon which might make it really easy and cheap to use FreePBX as a home user, but it isn’t there yet. Anyway, I’m rambling now…but this was just fresh in my brain.
Hopefully, others more knowledgeable will chime in,
Kevin
