As a web developer I’m used to testing sites on a range of different systems and browsers.
There’s of course the good old desktop and laptops with many a different browser and screen size. However, it’s mobile when things get really interesting… With iOS there’s a few different sizes and browsers bit Apple have kept things pretty simple – but Android – that’s a whole other ball game!
Check out this set of slides about the history and state of the Android Browser:
Does your brain hurt – mine does!
Also, due to the more flexible nature of Android many of the ‘older’ browsers are still in (relatively) wide usage. Here’s a graphic from the Android Developers Dashboard showing the use of Android versions as of early July 2014. Check out the page for more on the current state of Android usage.
At this point I should probably say that primarily I’m an Apple user! I’ve got an iPhone and iPad and an old Android tablet.
You might think that I’m just another Apple fan boy saying what a mess Android is – far from it! Android is doing some VERY cool things that I really would love to see on my iOS devices đŸ™‚
There are some nifty online ways of emulating Android like Manymo; but nothing beats really holding a gadget and pushing real buttons!
So over to you:
How do you test sites on Android and what do you use?
I’m looking at getting a new Android test device. What would people recommend a good value one?Â
