Nope.
Not that Silver Surfer.
These Silver Surfers refer to Internet users who are age 50 and older. These aren’t just retirees who are still using Internet Explorer 6 to play Farmville on Facebook, either. This segment of the Internet community is using the World Wide Web for social media, shopping and even education.
Let’s take a closer look at these Silver Surfers and see if we can’t break some of those negative stereotypes that often accompany older generations and their relationship with new technology.

Some interesting facts:
- 53% of Twitter users are over age 50.
- Age 47-65 spend 27 hours per week online.
- Those age 50+ constitute 59% of the online consumer population.
While these stats (or those in the infographic) are not earth shattering, it is a good reminder of the age diversity online. The Internet isn’t just a place to reach teens and young adults, but people of all different ages.
Has this shifted your thinking about Internet users at all?

Many of the Millennials I meet seem shocked that I am tech conversant. Yes, I have a home on Twitter and Facebook, but also on Reddit and Tumblr. You see, the web was not “always there” for me. I was already a mom when Apple’s “1984” commercial changed the world’s view of computers. I know what a modem sounded like as it connected to AOL. I have grown with social media, from Usenet groups to Vine. Not every graying granny pooh-poohs social media!
