I am fairly sure my nephews had not heard of Facebook until it was prominently featured in the latest Smurfs movie. Thank you Sony Pictures for forcing an opportunity to have to explain to a 9 year-old how a website, despite its global popularity, is in fact not something deserving of his time and attention because it’s just not cool. I’m still not sure how I pulled it off.
While you might miss Social Smurf and his theatrical debut if you blink, his off-screen activities are sure to catch your attention. He has both Twitter and Instagram accounts and his blog has been featured on Huffpost.com’s parent page giving safe social media tips.
Helpful?
Or clever marketing?
Whatever the ultimate intention, they certainly have created a point of conversation, a chance to evaluate how saturated your work and personal life is with social media, and whether or not you may need to make changes.
I’m one of those rare communication people who err on the side of restraint when it comes to social media. I much prefer face-to-face interaction, and choose that when I have that privilege. However, I suppose I owe a genuine “thank you” to Sony Pictures. My nephew and I enjoyed a nice afternoon of fun and as a result, I had a lovely face-to-face conversation. Time spent in person is priceless.
Sidenote: The movie really wasn’t so bad. I enjoyed the Parisian setting above all, and Hank Azaria as Gargamel always steals the show.
