Are you giving anything up for Lent this year?
I’m afraid we focus far too much on what we’re giving up and not enough on what we’re thankful for. Lent shouldn’t be all about leaving Facebook and giving up coffee, it’s a time to thoughtfully pray and take positive steps in changing the world around us for the better. In the end, we become more thankful and focused in our daily Christian walk. What a great way to prepare ourselves for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection!
That’s why I love this iOS and Android app from Christian Aid:
Count Your Blessings
From the iTunes description:
Change lives, help end hunger and learn more about the world we live in with Count Your Blessings from Christian Aid. Each day from Shrove Tuesday to Easter Sunday, you’ll get a short fact or story, a stunning photograph and the opportunity to reflect, act or pray to help end poverty. You can take part on your own, or get your friends and church to join you.
Download today and help create a better world this Lent.
I love it! 😀
Using a “Count Your Blessings” app–what a great way to participate in Lent.

You can download it–for free–for the iPhone, iPad and Android systems.
Alternatives
If you’re not keen on downloading this app, you may also consider using any number of the excellent note taking apps available and take time everyday to write down something you’re thankful for.
It can be difficult for many to “fast from Facebook” (or social media) as it’s like saying you want to “fast from people.” Who does that?
Unless you’re hopelessly addicted–if you are, maybe you should consider giving it up in general, not just for Lent–there are many other things you can fast from:
- Video games
- Movies
- Television
- YouTube/Vimeo
- Books
- Coffee
- Coffee from Starbucks
- Junk food
- Soda pop
- Fast food
- And more!
Just remember, it isn’t just about the “giving up,” it’s about getting ourselves mentally and spiritually ready for Easter.
What’s the best way for you to do that?
