Word on the street is that Flip is being axed by Cisco.
It now seems obvious, but at first this came as a real shock to me. I always saw Flip as very successful and popular, as their cameras are so unique and so easy to operate, how could they possibly be in any difficulty?
But, the thing is this. Increasingly mobile devices such as the iPhone are taking over with, in many cases, much better results. They are fully integrated too which means much easier uploads and editing, mostly directly on the device itself.
Flip, I will miss you, I am sad that you are gone, I was actually going to purchase a new flip soon for recording video blogs.
Having seen the video capabilities in the iPhone 4 though, I think I will be extremely happy with getting myself an iPhone 5 when it finally gets released.
What are your feelings about the death of Flip?
Andrew says
I’m kind of sad, actually. I like my Flip even though I also have an iPhone 4. There are a lot of situations in which I prefer having a dedicated video camera, especially when I know I’ll be taking a lot of video and don’t want to kill my phone battery in the process. Plus I like that I can hold the Flip in portrait and it’ll record the video in landscape, which IMO is the single most annoying flaw of the iPhone video camera.
That said, I’m not too surprised to see them get axed. The market just isn’t there anymore.

Sad times indeed…
Mickey says
Sad, but inevitable. I have one, and I’ll continue to use it, but my phone can shoot nearly the same quality video. The big difference is that it’s still easier to get large videos off of the Flip. Shoot a 10 minute HD video on your phone, then try to copy it to your desktop. It’s getting easier, but you can’t beat the quick USB transfer on the Flip.
If you were planning to purchase one soon anyhow, I don’t see why their strategic decision should affect yours. If it made sense yesterday, why doesn’t it still make sense today?
James Brooks says
Good point, I think because I wasn’t planning on getting one quite so soon.
Stephen Bateman says
I was surprised at first, but like you said, it makes sense.
Though I do have a Kodak version of the Flip, and it came in handy last week when we shot 48 straight minutes (8gb) for a birthday party. Can’t do that on a phone…
James Brooks says
True story Stephen.
