There are times when Star Wars and the Church is mixed in such a way that’s … uh … like the Benny Hinn video above. Hilarious? Awkward? Weird? Shameful?
At the same time, we see Star Wars art like the one below, and liken it to church stained glass windows.
It’s interesting to see how pop culture and the Church overlap.
Some reject it entirely while others embrace it completely. I’m not sure either approach is healthy and there is probably an ideal balance in between. We are in the world, after all, even though we are not to be of it.
With the fun we’ve had on ChurchMag, today, I figured there will be mixed reactions. Some will complain, others will applaud. Just as you have those in the Church who completely reject Star Wars, and those who may decorate part of their Sunday School room with Star Wars or create a Star Wars VBS theme.
It really is a double edged sword that must be wielded well.
- If we become too isolated from our culture, how are we going to ever reach those in it?
- If we become too ingrained in our culture, how are we going to ever reach those in it?
I’ve always found it odd, or perhaps a bit hypocritical, when I hear people being outspoken against comic books and sci-fi, and then they grin ear to ear as they talk about Tim Tebow’s game winning touchdown.
Whether you’re talking sports with a jock or Star Wars with a geek, our goal is the same, right?
To reach the lost and make disciples?
I think we can all agree on that.
Don’t you?
