Wow. This might just be one of the coolest plugins I’ve found in recent time: WP SmushIt.
I’ve written about the service a while ago but someone took it to the next level and integrated it directly in WordPress, auto-optimizing the images on the fly.
Wickedly-cool.
It simply adds a new column on the right (see image above) and a few more options if you want to tweak. Optimizing your images can reduce size of your page load, reduce the time to load, and speed up your blog for the world to see. Only positives here!
Seriously, this plugin is sweet.

This plugin address the only reason I didn't want to use Smush.it previously, that it was a bit of a laborious process to use the service from their website. I can't wait to try it out.

pass it on!

Actually, I haven't had any luck getting this Smush.it plugin to compress images already in my media library. It keeps returning the error message, "Bad response from Smush.it" with a link to Re-smush. Anyone else having this issue?

Yeah, I am having the same problem. Specially with the .JPG files…

it's about time! good stuff.

Hmmm… Tried using it but I keep getting "bad response from Smush.it"
human3rror says
DOH! it worked fine for me…

It's probably my fault… usually is 🙂
jaledwith says
No, I'm having the same trouble. Although, come to think of it, it's also usually my fault…

Thanks for the info – on my way to try it out… have I mentioned that I heart WordPress lately?

I have been coming to your site for some time now and I really appreciate what you have to say. I am new at blogging and I was wondering if you could help me with a question I have. I have a wordpress.com site and I am wondering if I can attach the facebook icon and the twitter icon on my blog like many other blogs do? Is there any way you can help me? My address is: http://ssabourin.wordpress.com Look forward to hearing from you.

Gracepoint After Five just recently launched punypng (http://www.gracepointafterfive.com/punypng) which combines a lot of the open-source technologies out there. The Ask.com User Experience team that I'm a part of uses punypng as our weapon of choice as well as the Gracepoint Fellowship Church web team. It's very competitive to smush.it and pngout, and punypng beats them out most of the time (though don't my word for it, try it out yourself to see).
I think the great thing about something like punypng versus the command-line tools is that you can throw a whole folder at punypng and just let punypng do all the work to figure out which tool is best for the job. Sometimes converting a JPEG to PNG and then compressing it down is better … sometimes jpeg-tran or jpegoptim is better. Punypng just works.
