@PhillipGibb asked me a good question this morning about another username checking service called FriendsCall.me, much like the UserNameCheck.com.
A closer look reveals that it is truly similar to a host of other services out there, but it does look a little more polished and clean.
An additional functionality worth noting is the supposed “notification” when other services come available so that you can get your username before anyone else.
That could be helpful and at one point I would have signed up for it, but I’ve changed my mind about this type of practice. I’m no longer interested in being a part of every service out there.
In the past I would have suggested that you go and signup for every service under the sun. I’ve totally reversed my thinking now and I’d rather just be “king” in a few areas than have my username splattered across multiple services that are completely bare and unused.
From an SEO perspective it makes sense too, since deep engagement in only a handful of services is much more valuable than surface-level engagement on hundreds.
Finally, I’ve put much more time into my personal blogging than any other service out there, and that is ultimately where you should too. You can’t control how the services use your data, farm your data, how it’s represented in SEO, and if it’ll be around for a long time.
But, you can control most of that through your blog, and you won’t have to worry about the “service” shutting down on you.
Spend time on a few social services but not too many. Here’s a great article I wrote about “Choosing Your Social Networks Wisely” that still applies.

I like the consolidation and the notification, but one thing that bothers me is that it does not seem to allow multiple claims e.g. for human3rror and churchcrunch
