We’ve retired the “Sunday Special QA” posts and replaced it with a new “Ask 8BIT” series title.
No surprises but it’s the exact same thing: Ask us anything about anything and someone from the 8BIT Team will hook you up with an answer in the coming week.
Got a question? Shoot.
PhillipGibb says
been chomping at the bit to ask this one: What editor do you use for CSS, PHP and HTML editing? And Java Script and jQuery for that matter.
I have been using Coda in demo mode every now and again, but I find $99 a lot to part ways with.
John Saddington says
i use coda and espresso.
http://www.panic.com/coda/
and
http://macrabbit.com/espresso/
i like coda the best.
PhillipGibb says
darn ๐ Coda does look very cool.
What about XCode? it might be overkill but doesn’t cover the web dev bases?
John Saddington says
sure. it could work.
tanya says
like it
John Saddington says
test.
John Saddington says
test again.
John Saddington says
test again. and again.
John Saddington says
test again… and again… and again.
John Saddington says
one more time. for fun.
John says
word…?
Stephen Bateman says
I’m all about Espresso, though Coda is undoubtedly better…
Espresso just came in the MacHeist bundle.
Tom says
It depends on the project for me. If it’s a full-fledged web application from database up to middle-layer to markup, I’ll usually use Aptana which is based on Eclipse.
A lot of the time though, I use Notepad++.
PhillipGibb says
hmm I sure like the idea of using Aptana – since Eclipse is what I use for Java Development. Thanks – I will try that plugin soon ๐
Jen C says
How do you set a WP theme so that the background image is stationary and the posts/sidebar scroll?
John Saddington says
p.pos_fixed
{
position:fixed;
top:30px;
right:5px;
}
John Saddington says
its’ the “fixed” call.
John Saddington says

Jen C says
Hey thanks! ๐
John Saddington says
sure!
benrwoodard says
Do you see 8Bit holding it’s own conference in 2010? Do you plan on sponsoring a web ministry conference around Atlanta soon? Just curious.
John Saddington says
yes. we are planning on doing something like this. stay tuned.
austinklee says
Who wins when you all play Monopoly? John, Chris, or Stephen?
Tom says
None of ’em. I do. Always.
John Saddington says
he lies.
John Saddington says
i ninja them.
SamMahlstadt says
WordPress question: what exactly is a spider on WP stats?
Tom says
Spiders are tools that search engines use to literally crawl the web, index pages, and generally collect other information about a website.
Since they actually request pages, they can count as views.
John Saddington says
tom is epic.
SamMahlstadt says
So it isn’t an actual person looking at a page or post?
For instance, this is a day out of my stats: 322 visitors – 609 page views – 240 spiders – 52 feeds. What does this actually mean??
Thanks, this has been bugging me ever since I had to switch from WP stats to Stat Press!
John Saddington says
Yeah. Unfortunatley.
Brian Alexander says
Why does this look very similar to http://mac.appstorm.net/
Brian Alexander says
I just saw it and was like hey that’s very similar to this site.. Did you even notice your sites look very similar?
John Saddington says
so, to answer the question, yes. they were a DIRECT inspiration.
John Saddington says
why? because we we’re DEFINITELY inspired by their design! i spoke with herman, their lead designer, and asked for tips and ideas and we’ve had some great conversations.
we took some of their ideas and implemented them here, and then added our own flare and touch!
Jared says
8bit does it a “bit” better ๐
John Saddington says
eh.
๐
how are you bro? thinking about you all day today.
Brian Alexander says
Yea, I can see the similarities, but also love the changes that you have made here. Like Jared says though. 8bit does it a “bit” better. I would have to agree, even though it’s a bad pun. ๐
John Saddington says
:).
and yes, the formatting errors exist after the 5th reply.
Stephen Bateman says
Wow you have a good eye…
Scott Magdalein says
You guys seeing much value in the Facebook community? I hear all these massive stats, but I don’t hear of too many corps or blogs or brands doing really well there.
We’re giving it about a month of heavy action on our Facebook page as a test run to see if we see tangible return on the time investment.
John Saddington says
not really…. yet.
we’re still growing. but, i need to “hire” a manager or something.
Aaron Melton says
Any chance of publishing all the 8bit content under a single RSS feed?
I’m currently subscribed to all the 8bit sites via Twitter and since there is some cross-posting going on it generates a bit of noise from time to time.
John Saddington says
yeah. that it does.
Aaron Melton says
“Awesomesauce”
Stephen Bateman says
Not necessarily asking how, but is it possible to use a variable sidebar, so on long pages there is lots of sidebar stuff, but for shorter pages it cuts the sidebar off.
Possible?
John Saddington says
will look into it. does it annoy you?
