The entire month of May is Digital Outreach Month with Internet Evangelism Day on May 15th.
Internet Evangelism Day coordinator, Tony Whittaker says:
There are many simple yet fulfilling ways of being salt and light in cyberspace.
In all seriousness, you should mark your online calendar for May 15th. Internet Evangelism Day is partnering with several major publishers to offer free e-book downloads of Christian titles that would normally cost you. These e-books cover web evangelism, social networking and other areas of effective online communication.
It isn’t all about the free stuff and promotional’s, either. Digital Outreach Month and Internet Evangelism Day is all about being an online light.
With the online world full of negativity and cyber-bullying, it’s important for Christians to be a salt and light. The fallout and hate directed toward Rebecca Black’s “Friday” YouTube video is a recent example. It wasn’t enough to dislike a video, it was as if being mean and hateful was the form of entertainment. Even my own YouTube videos get their share of hate mail. The web can be a very ugly place. A very dark place.
I am often very impressed by the 8BIT blogging community. Even when there is some heavy disagreement, everyone presents themselves in a Godly manner. Let the month of May be a reminder that everyone is watching.
Whether it be the “Rob Bell fallout” or “Benny vs. Phil“, the world is watching how we behave. How we conduct ourselves online. There should be no deep divide between our online lives and our real-life lives. Digital Outreach Month shouldn’t be how to “Save Your Facebook Friends in Five Easy Steps”, it should be, “How to Love Your Online Neighbor As Yourself.”
