Mark Driscoll lays it down in this secret “Easter Egg” video:
Video games are not sinful, just stupid.
Can’t see it? Enter in the “Konami Code” when you visit MarsHillChurch.org and you’ll get to listen to opinion on video games.
Not sure what you need to do? Here’s the cheat:
Type: “up up down down left right left right B A Enter” on your keyboard!

I’m a big fan of Mark, but also a big fan of video games. I think the spirit of what he meant is completely lost in his message. Mark watches a fair amount of UFC fights and for a lot of people video games are similar to that in that they are just some leisurely entertainment that we sometimes need. When video games become an obsession or taking up an inordinate amount of our time then that can subtly shift over to idolatry. I believe this is what Mark means but his manner of delivering this has caused a fair amount of controversy and animosity.

I’m very close to a few people that have known Mark for years, since he was in college, and they will tell that he has always been very good at his delivery bringing a fair amount of controversy and animosity. I think it’s intentional, he means what he says but often it’s 1 or 2 sentences that stand out and people rant and rave over, they miss the rest of the message and put too much into what he said rather than what he didn’t say.
I will completely agree with Mark, 100%, video games are stupid. With that said I also enjoy playing them a bit and happen to find it good source of stress relief.

Wow, I love Driscoll, but I really love his tech team! What an inovative easter egg. It was fun just to put the old school code in.
Now onto video games. Mark addresses something that is very important as the video game industry has been increasing and never decreasing (except for the 1st quarter of this year, first time loss happened). Video games are not stupid but they can create stupid people. That is why we do Overkill. A massive LAN party to reach gamers. We started it to create a community for gamers and to share the Gospel. We started it for the hardcore PC gamer who sits in their room and only leaves for class, to eat or a LAN party. Mark – there are people listening and doing something about it! PTL!

Agreed. My friend Drew Dixon wrote a pretty good response to Driscoll’s games-are-stupid claim:
