I’m fairly sure I first came across Todd Henry on a productivity podcast (perhaps beyond the todo list or maybe the now defunct Mikes on Mics) when his last book “Die Empty” came out. He brought up a couple of points on the origins of words and their meanings as well as the importance of using our time on this work to do what really matters. I was instantly hooked on his stuff and followed him ever since.
Earlier this year, his new book “Louder than words” came out and I pre-ordered it. Living in Poland and traveling back to the UK every Summer leads to some problems for me with keeping up with the latest in English language books, that’s why I’ve only just managed to finish reading it and to spoil the end of my review.
I think it is a must read for any creative person (which probably includes you).
Why Your Authentic Voice Matters
Louder than Words: Harness the power of your authentic voice is Todd’s latest book that moves on from his previous focuses on being creative on demand (in The Accidental Creative), living a life without regret and doing your most important work (in Die Empty) and now focuses on developing your voice. Todd lay’s out why this is important in this book, but in essence, an authentic voice is vital to create a message with a lasting impact. As he often says in his podcast “Cover bands don’t change the world, don’t be one.”
This is more important than ever when there are so many people and groups out there who are all clamoring for our attention, the groups that will stand out and be listened to are those who have developed their own authentic voice.
The book is divided into different sections which look at the core components of developing an authentic book as well as having a final section dedicated to helping managers of groups to work together for their common message. Each chapter is filled with real life examples, inspiring quotes, evidence based research and ends with questions to help you work out how to apply that section into your life.
It is well written which makes it very easy to read, but to properly go through the book and address all the questions should take you some time. I recommend dedicating a couple of months, read a chapter a week, and set aside some time to work through the questions at the end. Doing so will no doubt help you more than trying to rush through and read the book in one sitting.
Summing Up
To sum up, if you are a creative person (and I’m sure you are in some way) then you have to check out this book. It will help you or your organization make your message stand out and resonate with others.
